The Soft Matter and Chemistry Laboratory (MMC) established in 2001 and led by Ludwik Leibler, is involved in research combining fundamental and applied aspects. It addresses both chemistry and physics of polymer and colloids as materials science. The team is composed of thirty people including professors, senior researchers, technical staff, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows from different continents and backgrounds. The laboratory maintains numerous collaborations with industrial companies in sectors as diverse as chemistry, oil exploration, automotive, biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals, coatings, cosmetics and water treatment. The recent discovery of a self-healing rubber and the introduction of vitrimers, a new class of organic materials that behave like glass aroused great public interest.

The Soft Matter and Chemistry Laboratory is a CNRS / ESPCI Paris joint research unit (UMR 7167).
